Hazardous Materials TEAM
Butler County is home to a diverse cross-section of industries, including polymer, metal, chemical, agricultural, and manufacturing operations. Many of these industries utilize specialized chemicals and other hazardous materials as raw materials in their production processes. As a result, industrial operations throughout the county have the potential for hazardous materials incidents. To help address these risks, Butler County maintains the Butler County Regional Hazardous Materials TEAM.
Established in 1991, the HAZMAT TEAM is a collaborative effort involving Butler County Government; all city, village, and township governments within Butler County; all fire departments within the county; the Butler County Bomb Squad; Butler County HazSWAT; and the Butler County Emergency Management Agency.
Each fire department in Butler County provides personnel trained to the hazardous materials operations level to support the County's specialized HazMat response teams. The Butler County Emergency Management Agency provides administrative support to the Cooperative and its Board of Directors, whose members represent the agencies and governmental entities that comprise the hazmat TEAM.
The BC hazmat Team is responsible for emergency response and mitigation activities associated with hazardous materials incidents. The TEAM does not perform long-term cleanup or take possession of contaminated materials. Responsibility for cleanup, disposal, and remediation remains with the spiller, responsible party, or property owner, as applicable.
The Butler County Hazardous Materials Response TEAM Board of Directors meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 9:30 a.m. at the Butler County Emergency Operations Center.
