The Butler County Fire Investigation Team (BCFIT) is comprised of experienced fire investigators from fire departments throughout Butler County. The Team responds to structure fires, vehicle fires, and explosion incidents within the county when requested by the local Fire Chief.

The Team responds to approximately 25 incidents each year and works closely with the local fire and law enforcement agencies to determine the origin and cause of fires occurring within Butler County. This collaborative approach helps ensure that fire investigations are conducted thoroughly, professionally, and in accordance with established investigative standards.

All Team members are required to complete, at a minimum, a 40-hour Basic Fire Investigation course. Several members hold nationally recognized professional credentials, including Certified Fire Investigator (CFI), Fire Investigator Technician (FIT), Evidence Collection Technician (ECT), and Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI) certifications.

These professional credentials are issued through recognized organizations, including the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) and the National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI).

Team members participate in ongoing training, professional development, and regular meetings to maintain and enhance their investigative skills. Continuing education ensures that the Team remains current with evolving fire science, investigative techniques, evidence collection practices, and nationally recognized standards in the field of fire investigation.
